Each year, the Association for Professionals in Aging recognizes the professionals who do outstanding work in the field of aging. This year’s award winners were honored on February 19 at the Annual APA Awards Happy Hour at Seasons.

Kate Race, Assisting Hands Home Care
Outstanding Project in the Field of Aging

Kate serves as the Regional Director of Business Development for Assisting Hands Home Care. She is also a PAC-certified dementia care trainer and hosts a monthly dementia education webinar series "Real Talk." As a leader of three Alzheimer's Association support groups throughout Northern Kentucky, she utilizes her 20+ years of experience in memory care to provide support and resources as she helps families navigate through their health journeys.

Daneika "DD" Farmer, ERS
Outstanding Service Provider in the Field of Aging

As Household Coordinator Deupree Cottages, a long-term senior care facility by Episcopal Retirement Services (EPS), DD oversees daily life of residents at the Cottages – doing everything from facilitating difficult family conversations to staying overnight with residents during snow and ice storms.

In her 15 years with EPS, she has held many positions, beginning as a versatile worker at the Cottages. Spreading her rich knowledge and enthusiasm in the community, DD is an accomplished public speaker and author. Recently, she presented at the Music, Movement & Dementia Conference. She also authored the Amazon bestseller “The Caregiver’s Advocate: A Complete Guide to Support and Resources.”

Jennifer Tilford, Seasons
Outstanding Leader in the Field of Aging

At Seasons Senior Lifestyle Community, Jennifer is Move-In Coordinator, helping families during what can be a challenging time. Jennifer serves on the Senior Advocate Action Group (SAAG) board and is an active volunteer with Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly.

December marked more than the end of the calendar year – it was the end of a board tenure for four of our board members: Sylvia Dwertman, Rob Jutze, Emily Elma, and Kristy Matheson. We so appreciate your work! Even though they will not be official board members, we look forward to seeing them at future APA meetings as APA members.

Sylvia Dwertman

Sylvia’s time on the APA board began in 2016, and became chair of the promotions committee. Sylvia served as board president in 2023-2024 and has just ended her board tenure as immediate past president.

Sylvia is a marketing liaison for Visiting Angels West – the 2^nd largest home health care franchise in the United States. Sylvia entered the senior care industry in 2014 after a 30-year career in the airlines.

From Sylvia:

"I joined APA as a member when I first started with Visiting Angels Cincinnati West in 2011. The connections and friendships I have made in the past ten years are very meaningful. When you are working alone most of the time developing relationships in the industry, it is comforting to know you can reach out to those in the field for answers and partnerships. As I advanced from being a member to joining the APA board, I was excited to be on the edge of change and provide value to our members. As board president during the COVID lockdown, I realized it was more important than ever to provide ways to stay connected in the industry and we had to think out of the box and provide value to our members. We offered more virtual resources – focused on education and networking – to support our goals of advocacy and scholarships.

I consider it a privilege to witness our members' growth, work to expand our programming and provide scholarships for those dedicated to studying in the field of geriatrics."

Rob Jutze

Rob has been a board member for six years, serving as chair of both the promotions committee and the bylaws committee. He is the owner of Senior Impact Publications, and for over 25 years has produced the Older Adults Resource Guide in Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky and several other cities in Ohio and Kentucky. Rob is also on the Board of Directors of Meals on Wheels of Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. A lifelong Cincinnatian, if he’s not at work, you just might find him at the ballpark!

Emily Elma

In Emily’s six years on the board, she has served on the Advocacy, Events and Scholarship Committees. Emily chaired the 2022 and 2023 APA Award Event Committee. She has also co-presented to the APA on the use of improvisation skills in healthcare. Her kindness, silliness and curiosity combined with her passion for working with those with behavioral health and neurocognitive challenges brings a warm spirit to everything she does.

Emily is the Southern Ohio Clinical Social Work Supervisor for WellBe Senior Medical.

Kristy Matheson

Kristy has been a board member for five years, serving as the chair of the APA education committee. She has helped develop educational classes, even presenting some of them. She has also managed the CEs that the APA educational events provide. She recently began working with Teva Pharmaceuticals.

APA: Tell us your name, job position and describe what your business provides to the community.
Cleopatra (Cleo) Kum, PhD, RN. I am an assistant professor of Nursing at University of Cincinnati and the founder/administrator of Family Support Care.

Family Support Care is a Medicare-accredited home health agency serving older adults and people with disabilities throughout Southwest Ohio. We provide skilled nursing and home health aide services, as well as physical, occupational, and speech therapy and medical social work.

APA: How long have you been an APA board member?
I have had the privilege of serving as a board member for nearly a year. I was first introduced to APA through Judy Singleton, the previous APA Scholarship Committee Chair, who spoke highly of the organization and its mission. After attending several events, I saw firsthand the remarkable work APA is doing in our community. With a passion for aging research and a commitment to supporting older adults, I am honored to serve on the board and to contribute to efforts that positively impact the lives of older adults across our region.

APA: How long have you lived in Cincinnati?
I was born in Cameroon, a beautiful country in West/Central Africa, and I have proudly called Cincinnati home since December 2010.

APA: Thinking about your professional life, what are you most proud of?
Professionally, I am incredibly proud of my team at Family Support Care and all we have accomplished through delivering high-quality, person-centered home healthcare in our region. I am also gratified when I see nursing students embracing critical thinking and evidence-based practice in their work. Watching them grow into thoughtful, skilled clinicians is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

APA: If we were to ask your best friend about you, what would they say?
My best friend says I’m kind and happy most of the time, but also very stubborn once I have made up my mind.

APA: What’s the most important lesson you learned from an older adult in your life?
A home health client once told me to “never let the world change who you are,” and that advice has stayed with me throughout my career.

Irene Moore, Professor Emerita, University of Cincinnati, Department of Family and Geriatrics Medicine

APA: How long have you been an APA member?
I have held most every position in APA. I am a lifetime member.

APA: How long have you lived in Cincinnati?
In 1987, I was recruited by University of Cincinnati from the Duke Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development. I am a Vine Swamp, North Carolina native.

APA: Thinking about your professional life, what are you most proud of?
My career was all things geriatrics! I was the first non-physician to be named a Fellow of the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) based in New York City. I served as vice president of the AGS Foundation on Health and Aging.

APA: If we were to ask your best friend about you, what would they say?
My best friend from the first grade describes me as “old school,” steady, thoughtful and a very focused listener.

APA: What, or who, inspires you, and why?
I am fortunate to have had my personal and professional mentor since 1978. She personally believed in me and gave her professional endorsement for me to publish a book chapter, numerous articles and national keynote presentations.

Getting to Know APA Member Lisa Kruse!

This month, we turn the tables on the usual author of our monthly "Getting to Know" article, Lisa Kruse! Lisa has produced this feature for us for the past 3 years, so it's about time we learned a little more about her.

APA: Tell us your job position and describe what your business provides to the community.

I am currently Communications Specialist with the Council on Aging of Southwestern Ohio. We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for older adults, people with disabilities, their families and caregivers. COA is also and APA Education Sponsor.

APA: How long have you been a Board Member?

I joined the board in January 2025. Being an APA board member does nothing but strengthen my ability to connect with professionals in aging and share COA knowledge. Oh, and also: I believe wholeheartedly in what APA is all about: supporting older adults to live their best lives and collaborate with other professionals while doing it.

APA: How long have you lived in Cincinnati? Where else have you called home?

I have lived in Cincinnati since I was in 6^th grade. Before that, I grew up in McLean, Virginia. Prior to that, I was born and lived the first year of my life in Pittsburgh, PA.

APA: What, or who, inspires you? And why?

This one’s easy – my mother. Since my father died in 2020, she has accomplished so much. Yes, the big things - living alone, traveling solo, seeing her granddaughter marry. But simply navigating daily life as a widow definitely presents many challenges, and her list of “I did that!” moments is quite long. Her strength inspires me each and every day.

APA: It’s often said that we can learn a lot from our elders. What’s the most important lesson you learned from an older adult in your life?

Without ever saying a word, my father modeled the importance of remaining calm.

APA: Share with us about your family. Where do they live?

I live in Hyde Park with my husband of 30 years, our two Brittaneys and two cats. My daughter (27) was married in April and she and her husband also live in Hyde Park. My son (24) is beginning his Geology career living in Columbus.

APA: Who does the cooking in your house? What is your “go-to” restaurant when you aren’t eating at home?

I consider myself one lucky girl: My husband does all the cooking! And he’s very good at it. I have many food sensitivities and he constantly creates gourmet, yummy dishes that fit the bill.

APA: Tell us your job position and describe what your business provides to the community.
I am the Executive Director of Little Brothers – Friends of The Elderly, relieving older adults of loneliness and isolation by providing support, companionship and love. We have a specific focus on older adults lacking family support.

APA: How long have you lived in Cincinnati?
All my life! I was born and raised in Cincinnati.

APA: It’s often said that we can learn a lot from our elders. What’s the most important lesson you learned from an older adult in your life?
From my grandparents, to my great aunts and uncles, and my mother, the most important lesson that I have learned is that our decisions of today impact our tomorrow. In all that we do: be rational, be patient, take time to sort through the options, and always do your research.

APA: Thinking about your professional life, what are you most proud of?
As just the second generation of a 28-year-old organization, and having served here for nearly three years, I feel privileged to help position our elderly friends as the true drivers of our work.

A key part of this evolution has been building a solid, dedicated team—including amazing colleagues like Dawn, Zaire, and Harrison—who share the same passion and commitment. Together, we are laying a strong foundation to ensure we not only honor the needs of today’s elders but also prepare to meet the evolving needs of future generations of older adults, volunteers, and donors. Our goal is to increase capacity, remain relevant, and be adaptable long after my time here.

I am so proud of my growth during my 15+ year career, and I am grateful for each person who has mentored me, provided coaching, or just been in my corner and a part of my story.

APA: Tell us your job position and describe what your business provides to the community.
I work in operations for Council on Aging (COA). COA is your connection to the wide variety of programs and services available to older adults, people with disabilities and caregivers. As an Area Agency on Aging, we are here to answer questions, share information about options, and connect individuals to the community resources and services that can best meet their needs.

APA: How long have you been a board member? Why did you join the APA board?

I have been a board member since fall of 2024. I became a board member because I want to increase the options and quality of services available for older adults and I believe that supporting those who work in the field of aging is a great way to meet that goal.

APA: How long have you lived in Cincinnati?

I am from Columbus, Ohio and I moved to Cincinnati to attend college at Xavier University. I fell in love with the city and decided to make it my home after my 2022 graduation.

APA: It’s often said that we can learn a lot from our elders. What’s the most important lesson you learned from an older adult in your life?
Life is short, live it to the fullest.

APA: Thinking about your professional life, what are you most proud of?
I am proud of the personal growth that has resulted from regularly pushing myself out of my comfort zone.

Getting to know new APA president, Tracey Collins

As of the beginning of this year, the Association for Professionals in Aging (APA) has a new president. Tracey Collins will put her spin on the role she took over from Sylvia Dwertman. A long-time APA member, Tracey’s experience, combined with her enthusiasm for professionals in aging, is sure to propel the association forward. Read on to learn some of Tracey’s plan for what’s next.

APA: Why do you want to be Board President? What do you hope to accomplish/contribute?
I look forward to continuing Sylvia’s legacy with a full year of events for our membership. My goal is to increase scholarship awards in 2025. I see this as a great investment in our future aging professionals.

APA: What is your vision for APA?
I envision the organization providing leadership, support and advocacy for the community of professionals in aging. My goal is to develop a mentoring and coaching model for new professionals as they develop in their careers.

APA: What else would you like to say?
I have recently taken the role as Elder Care Coordinator for the Law Firm of Dennison Keller. I will continue to work with the older adult community by providing case management to the aging population. This includes advocating for their needs, brokering for services, facilitating end-of-life discussions and assisting with navigation of the aging life spectrum of services. This is a great honor for me to serve this community and assist with end-of-life decision making.

APA: Describe what your business provides to the community.
I work for Jewish Family Service as an Adult Therapist. Jewish Family Service provides excellent services to the community by offering therapy to both youth and the older adult population who are experiencing challenges with their mental health. I help by providing support to older adults and youth as they navigate various challenges.

APA: How long have you lived in Cincinnati?
Minus a few years living in Greensboro, NC when I attended school, I have lived in Cincinnati since 1991, where I was born.

APA: It’s often said that we can learn a lot from our elders. What’s the most important lesson you learned from an older adult in your life?
Work hard. We must work hard for what we want in life.

APA: Thinking about your professional life, what are you most proud of?
I am proud of the work that I do and the strength-based approach that I embody with my clients that has helped them to achieve their therapeutic and life goals.

APA: If we were to ask your best friend about you, what would he/she say?
I am passionate about my work, caring and very intelligent.

With the holidays approaching, now may just be a good time to get to know new APA board member Angel Burton – Chief Financial Officer at Clermont Senior Services. Read on to learn more about Angel.

APA: Describe what your business provides to the community.
Clermont Senior Services is the elderly services provider for Clermont County. We provide numerous programs serving our older adult population, with the hope of keeping them in their homes and living independently for as long as possible.

APA: How long have you lived in Cincinnati?
I was born and raised in Butler County, Ohio. I grew up in Okeana and graduated from Ross High School. My husband and I moved our family to Batavia, Ohio in 2002, and Clermont County is where we’ve stayed. We now live in Stonelick Township, just outside Owensville, Ohio, or close to Milford, Ohio – depending on which way you’re coming!

APA: What, or who, inspires you? And why?
My goal has always been to make my momma proud. She grew up very poor in eastern Kentucky, and moved to Cincinnati, where the jobs were. She ended up a single mother and worked her entire life to give me a better life. There has never been a day that I doubted her love for me, and even though I lost her in 2023, she will always be the reason I work hard and keep moving forward.

APA: Thinking about your professional life, what are you most proud of?
Prior to working in the non-profit space, I worked in government finance for almost 20 years, working my way up from a treasurer in a small village to the finance director of one of the largest local governments in Ohio.

APA: If we were to ask your best friend about you, what would he/she say?
She would probably chuckle and say it’s a good thing she loves me because I usually cancel plans, and I’m lousy at texting her back, but I’m loyal and I’m steadfast and I know all her secrets, so she’s stuck with me.

The APA is fortunate to have a strong Board of Directors which recently became even stronger with the addition of Pam Johnson, Senior Transition Specialist – Relocation Planners. Read on to learn about Pam, including her personal motto.

APA: Describe what your business provides to the community and how you do it.
At Relocation Planners, we help with selling or buying a home (Licensed Ohio Realtor) as well as help with liquidation of personal assets (Licensed Ohio Auctioneer).

APA: It’s often said that we can learn a lot from our elders. What’s the most important lesson you learned from an older adult in your life?
I’ve learned so much! But the most important – to put God first in all you do.

APA: How long have you lived in Ohio?
I am a lifelong Cincinnatian – born and raised.

APA: Thinking about your professional life, what are you most proud of? I am most proud of building a business that eases transitions in seniors’ lives.

APA: If we were to ask your best friends about you, what would he/she say?
That I try to help people.

APA: Share one thing that may be surprising for others to learn about you.
I once had a gig singing and delivering balloons.

APA: What else would you like to share?
My motto: You get what you give.

I am most proud of my 23-year service in the Army National Guard as well as our service to the older adults in our community.

APA: If we were to ask your best friends about you, what would he/she say?
They would say that I have a high standard of honesty and integrity.

APA: What, or who, inspires you, and why?
My grandfather was a fantastic inspiration in my life. He built and refinished furniture by hand. He taught me my work ethic.

APA: Describe what your business provides to the community and how you do it.
Amada Senior Care provides services to older adults through in-home care and management of long-term care insurance policies.

APA: How long have you lived in Cincinnati? Where else have you called home?
I have lived in the Cincinnati area since 2008. I am originally from Centerville, Ohio. I studied at The Ohio State University and graduated with a degree in social work with a focus on gerontology. After college, I moved to the Akron area for my first professional position. It was there I met my husband and had two wonderful children.

APA: Thinking of your professional life, what are you most proud of?
I am extremely proud that I have been honored throughout my career to help our aging population and their families throughout difficult situations.

APA: If we were to ask your best friends about you, what would he/she say?

APA: What, or who, inspires you, and why?
My father is my greatest inspiration. He grew up with limited means and worked extremely hard to be where he is today. My father overcame many challenges in life, and still remains the most humble individual I have ever known. His love is unwavering.

APA: It’s often said that we can learn a lot from our elders. What’s the most important lesson you learned from an older adult in your life?
I have learned to talk less, listen more, respect differences and, most importantly, that age is no barrier to friendship or love.

We are a law firm that specializes in Elder Law and Life Care Planning. Our attorneys help families put legal documents in place to protect their assets, while our elder care coordinators are a resource in navigating care options for aging individuals and their families. Overall, we provide peace of mind for older adults and their loved ones as they age.

APA: Please describe your involvement with APA.
I recently joined the APA board in January and am excited to be part of this great organization! The Law Practice of Dennison Keller is a media sponsor, and we host an APA Happy Hour event each May.

APA: How long have you lived in Cincinnati? Where else have you called home?
I have lived in Northern Kentucky for the majority of my life; I spent five years in Lexington (Go Cats!) and four years in Anderson Township.

APA: Thinking of your professional life, what are you most proud of?
The connections I’ve made with co-workers, peers, and the people I have served in the positions I held.

APA: If we were to ask your best friends about you, what would he/she say?
I think they would say that I am loyal, caring, funny, probably loud, and game for any challenge.

APA: What, or who, inspires you, and why?
My daughters. Seeing them navigate challenges as they grow up has made me much more understanding and empathetic to all of the underlying obstacles people face that we have no idea they are dealing with. You really never know what someone else is going through.

This is the third of a series of profiles to feature the winners. Read on to learn more about our Outstanding Leader – Elizabeth (Liz) Bangel-Stehlin.

The reasons Elizabeth (Liz) Bangel-Stehlin highly deserves the APA Outstanding Leader award are many, but here are a few:

First, Liz is very involved with the local chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. She was invited to represent the organization at the Community Leadership Summit in New Orleans in January and served as Vice Chair for their Spring Gala, Era of Hope, held May 16 at Music Hall.

Second, along with her partners Ali Puckett and Rachel Hodesh, she leads a non-profit called SAAG (Senior Advocate Action Group) which helps to provide many items to lower income older adults. With her leadership, SAAG has extended their Blessing Boxes locations from the East side to the West side of Cincinnati.

Third, Liz is very involved with Meals on Wheels and is a major player raising funds for them and supporting their organization. As a matter of fact, she danced in front of hundreds at the Dance Our Heart Out in November to raise funds for Meals on Wheels of Southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky.

And this is just a slice of what she’s involved in. It’s no wonder she’s an award winner!

APA: What is your name and job title? Tell us a bit about your organization.

Kristin Cooley, Program Director – Giving Voice Foundation
We are a grassroots non-profit that offers creative opportunities for support and engagement for local individuals with a dementia diagnosis and their care partners. Creative Connections is our music & movement program that has a caregiver support group that occurs simultaneously. We also offer monthly floral arranging classes (Brains in Bloom), ballroom dancing classes (Dancing to Remember), guided caregiver writing workshops (Caring for the Caregiver). In addition, we offer free consultations with licensed social workers to access local resources, dementia education, and comprehensive care planning (Purposeful Planning Program).

Angie Homoelle, Caregiver Assistance Network Coordinator – Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio

We serve and empower people through God’s love in their times of vulnerability. We do this through a full range of local services that engage the community in building solidarity.

APA: How long have you lived in Cincinnati? Where else have you called home?
Kristin: I’ve lived in Cincinnati since 2010. I am a born and bred Hoosier that ultimately jumped the state line…My hometown is Batesville, IN.

Angie: I was born and raised in Cincinnati. I know you’ll ask – so I went to McAuley High School. I’ve also lived in Nashville and Chicago. There are lots of wonderful places in this world, but Cincinnati is hard to beat!

APA: Thinking about your professional life, what are you most proud of?
Kristin: I’ve always been fueled by genuine connection with others, so I’m very proud of the community programs I’ve helped to create over the years.

Angie: I’m most proud of the growth of our caregiver support program. We’ve tripled the number of hours served per year since I started coordinating the program seven years ago. Creative Connections is a significant part of that!

APA: If we were to ask your best friend about you, what would they say?
Kristin: I would hope they would say I’m loyal, loving and supportive. But I really think my besties would say “that girl is WEIRD!”

Angie: She cares for everyone she comes in contact with.

APA: Describe what your business provides to the community and how you do it.
Queen City Hospice provides symptom management for people with a limited life expectancy. We can not cure the diagnosis but we can work with the symptoms that arise so the person has the best quality of life possible.

APA: It’s often said that we can learn a lot from our elders. What’s the most important lesson you learned from an older adult in your life?
I have always said that by sitting at the feet of an elder, listening to their experiences, you will hear the best life stories. My Aunt Nora, I called her Aunt Norie, never had children of her own and she was the youngest of six or seven siblings – all of whom had different personalities. When she told me stories, she would usually preface by saying, “I will tell you about your uncles and aunts but I want you to promise you will not act like them!” That would intrigue me even more!

APA: How long have you lived in Ohio?
I have always lived in Hamilton, Ohio. Hamilton is where I was born, raised and married. I live in an area of Hamilton called Fairfield Township.

APA: Thinking about your professional life, what are you most proud of?
I am most proud of providing 35 years of Hospice education in many roles. My grandchildren sometimes don’t get it. They often skeptically say, “When you talked about what you wanted to be when you grew up, did you say ‘hospice educator?’” I laugh and then share with them that life takes many twists and turns and I landed where I needed to be.

APA: If we were to ask your best friends about you, what would he/she say?
I hope they would say I am a caring, compassionate person that likes to help people and that I’m trustworthy, truthful and fun to be around!

APA: Share one thing that may be surprising for others to learn about you.
Prior to starting with Hospice, I taught tap and jazz dancing.

APA: Describe what your business provides to the community and how you do it.
At Jewish Family Services (JFS), our mission is to strengthen lives and our diverse community by providing exceptional and transformational human services. JFS excels in providing care management and counseling.

APA: How long have you lived in Cincinnati? Where else have you called home?
I have lived in the Cincinnati area for more than 40 years. I’m a true Midwest gal – born and raised in central Indiana.

APA: What are you most proud of?
Older adults are my jam and I love working with family caregivers. It has been my privilege throughout the past 20 years to meet and oversee services for area Holocaust Survivors.

APA: If we were to ask your best friends about you, what would he/she say?
Family is my everything. I’m a planner and try to be kind to everyone.

APA: What, or who, inspires you, and why?
This is easy – my mom. She became a widow with three children in her forties. She went back to work as a nurse, raised us and got us through college. She was a very strong and kind person.

Let’s learn a bit about this month’s featured APA member – Kathie Currier, Seniors Real Estate Specialist with Coldwell Banker Realty.

APA: Describe what your business provides to the community and how you do it.
I focus my business on working with older adults who need to sell a home in order to transition into a retirement/care community. I also work with many who need to sell a home to settle an estate after losing a loved one. My goal is to make everything less stressful and more successful for them.

APA: How long have you lived in Cincinnati? Where else have you called home?

I consider myself a native Cincinnatian with a few side trips. I have also lived in Texas and Alabama. I returned home in 1981, and have been here ever since.

APA: What are you most proud of?
I am proud to say that my work with older adults was recognized at the Ohio Association of Realtors (OAR) level when they asked me to conduct a Continuing Education class on working with seniors at the last OAR convention that was held in Cincinnati. Also, during my work for a large Northern Kentucky developer, I chaired their in-house United Way campaign and secured 100% employee participation in donations – a company first!

APA: If we were to ask your best friends about you, what would he/she say?
Great question! I really don’t know but I hope they would say that I am very ethical and professional, fair-minded, reliable, and trustworthy. When I say I will do something, I mean it and it will get done.

APA: What type(s) of music do you like and why?
When I’m in my office, I like to listen to WGUC classical music because it relaxes me and doesn’t have words that would distract me and make me want to sing with it. In the car, I like to be young again and listen to oldie goldies from the 60’s - 80’s.

Nan: Council on Aging (COA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing quality of life for older adults, people with disabilities, their families and caregivers. We promote choice, independence, dignity and well-being through a range of services that help people remain in their homes for as long as possible.

APA: Is Council on Aging a sponsor of the APA?
Nan: Yes. COA is an Education Sponsor. The educational programs offered by APA such as the recent Unpacking the Research Behind Current Alzheimer’s Treatments are tremendously helpful to the professionals caring for aging clients. We are strong supporters of continuing education and awareness among our staff and APA provides strong educational opportunities to support our mission.

APA: How long have you lived in Cincinnati? Where else have you called home?
Nan: I have lived in Cincinnati for most of my life. I have also lived in Washington, DC and Columbus, OH.

APA: Thinking about your professional life, what are you most proud of?
Nan: My career has focused on public service and I have been on the front lines of many important public policy changes and national, state & local emergencies. There are two things I’m most proud of: past and present. I am most proud of the work I did as a staff member in the US House of Representative and the US Senate during the recent COVID pandemic and following the attacks on 9/11. However, I am now most proud of my opportunity to work with COA to more directly help support individuals and families in my home region.

APA: If we were to ask your best friend about you, what would they say?
Nan: That’s a tough question but I think they would say I am compassionate, passionate, empathetic and I love my family.

Jane: I grew up in St. Marys, a small town in Western Ohio. After college at Miami University and a year of living in Cincinnati, I moved to Atlanta for a few years before returning to Ohio. Cincinnati has been my home ever since.

APA: Thinking about your professional life, what are you most proud of?

Jane: Being a part of my clients’ successes over the past 20 years. It’s such a wonderful feeling to see a company and its team transform as they make the progress that they aspired to. Seeing people’s faces light up as they realize what they can truly accomplish is amazing.

I love working with the APA board and members! It’s delightful to meet new people at every event and watch the organization thrive. I have worked with the APA since 2019, and have seen the membership grow from 40 to a real community of more than 160. Kudos to all of you who have made a contribution to the APA and are dedicated to the aging population!

Tony: Passing the CPA exam on my first try. It wasn’t an easy test. I’m also most proud of starting a new business during COVID – in 2020. These Cincinnati Parish magazines have helped bring the community together in very uncertain times when there was a large amount of negativity in our mainstream media. We are making a positive impact every month in the community and for our business sponsors.

It’s true…APA members are alike yet different. They are alike in that all share one very important interest: providing support for the aging population. Their differences are in their stories – each is unique. We’re fortunate to tell one of those here.

Dennison Keller is the Owner/Managing Member of the Law Practice of Dennison Keller, LLC. In his words, Dennison explains that his firm is an elder law firm that practices the Life Care Plan Model. That means we have a team of health professionals that incorporates care advocacy alongside the traditional legal advocacy of a law firm. Read on to learn more about Dennison.

APA: Thinking about your professional life, what are you most proud of?

Dennison: I am most proud of building a firm from the ground up that has not only safeguarded the life savings of countless senior citizens, but also advocated for their care, quality of life, and dignity in their last days.

APA: How long have you lived in Cincinnati? Where else have you called home?

Dennison: I grew up in Ripley, Ohio, and have lived in Cincinnati most of my adult life. Prior to my work as an attorney, I was a television journalist and that career took me to live in Youngstown, Ohio, Daytona Beach, Florida, and Orlando, Florida.

APA: If we were to ask your best friend about you, what would they say?

Dennison: Ha! I’m afraid that might not be suitable for print! But I’d like to think he’d say even though I can be irreverent, I have a good sense of humor. Most importantly, he’d say I’m loyal.

Tell us what you do and how you help the community.

I currently work at Seasons Retirement Community, where I am the Director of Sales and Marketing. Seasons provides senior independent and assisted living apartments for people 62 years and older.

Are you from Cincinnati? If not, where are you from?

I am originally from Toledo, and I moved to Cincinnati in 2012.

If you could travel anywhere in the world (with money being no object), where would you go?

I'd love to visit New Zealand for a month.

What is your biggest inspiration in life or in your job?

My inspiration is my family and friends. With working at Seasons, I love providing an excellent place to live so residents may age in place, with no worries. I am also a nurse; I love to help people anyway I can.

Tell us about yourself and family.

I am married to my husband, Rick. We have two daughters. Alexis is a pediatric nurse who is married to Clay, a pediatric neurosurgeon. They live in Colorado Springs with Landon, who is almost two years old. My other daughter is Maya, who is 23 and a Cincinnati firefighter. Our daughters are our pride and joy and we try to see them as often as we can. We also have two dogs, Moose and Rio.

What is your “go-to” restaurant?

What was the last book you read?

If you could see one musician/act in concert, who would it be?

The original lineup of Grateful Dead.

What do you do when you’re not working?

I love the outdoors – hiking, white water kayaking, off-roading, spending time in Tennessee at our property or visiting Colorado and my kids.

If you had one superpower, what would it be?

My superpower would be flight, so I could get to Colorado fast and see my daughter and grandson whenever I wanted! I also would like to have the power to take away pain to help those suffering.

What is your current and/or past favorite television show?

For a good laugh, the Big Bang Theory. My all-time favorites are Friends and Golden Girls.

Any additional information you would like to share?

I am the Past Chair of Retention Committee for ALZ Association Walk for eight years. In addition to being an APA board member, I am also a SAAG member, Teepa Snow certified dementia trainer and Registered Nurse.

2022 Outstanding Project in the Field of Aging

COVID-19 Vaccination Program for Homebound Older Adults

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Council on Aging (COA) went above and beyond for the older adults in our community. Seeing that the 65+ population was the segment of the population most impacted by severe illness and death from COVID-19, COA acted quickly to implement programs for social and nutritional needs of older adults. When vaccines became available to older adults, COA partnered with local public health agencies, the National Guard and other providers to quickly vaccinate and protect our older adult population. They were also instrumental in helping older adults navigate technology and complex registration requirements – making sure no one was left behind from accessing lifesaving vaccines.

COA established a process to receive homebound vaccination referrals from both internal clients and outside social service agencies. They created a standard protocol and database at the regional level, which incorporated a quality assurance process. This process ensured people who were added to the homebound vaccination list – actually received their shot. They consistently addressed the needs of a highly vulnerable population that was not being served or considered through other vaccination efforts.

Because of the COA's efforts, no doubt many of our seniors were saved from contracting COVID-19.

Luda’s story begins in the former Soviet Union where she was an educator. She met, fell in love, married and had a family with a Jewish man. As a result, Luda experienced discrimination due to anti-Semitism and was unable to advance in her career. In the late 80’s/early 90’s the Soviet Union allowed those identifying as Jewish to immigrate to the United States. Luda’s family arrived in the United States with no housing, no jobs and little if any English skills. Jewish Family Service of the Cincinnati Area stepped in and provided what Luda’s family needed to resettle and be successful here in the United States.

Luda then paid it forward by coming to work for Jewish Family Service and helped other families from the former Soviet Union resettle here. As an educator, she taught citizenship and English to these families and provide care management to navigate the public and private benefit systems here in the US. Luda also became a professor of Russian language at the University of Cincinnati.

In 2017, Luda created, designed and successfully launched the Russian Jewish Cultural Center. Its purpose was to provide a culturally responsive place to gather for older adults from the counties of the former Soviet Union including Russia and Ukraine. The center borrows from the concepts of senior centers and adult day care service centers but the focus is on American, Russian and Jewish culture.

When it opened, the center served 50 clients and today it serves over 200. Almost half are age 80 and over. Luda partners with the Mayerson Jewish Community Center on transportation and lunch.

During COVID Luda switched quickly and successfully to virtual programming much of which continues today. They are back two days a week at the center in person and field trips to the symphony, ballet, area parks and movies have resumed.

One client named Mila says, “The Russian Jewish Cultural Center is like a home, it gives me life”.

In 2022, Luda stepped up to help those fleeing the war in Ukraine, the country of her origin, to be able to be in the Cincinnati area often with family or friends. Each person/family’s situation is unique and the multitude of public and private systems to navigate through to be here legally is overwhelming and complicated.

Luda has done so much to help older adults in the Cincinnati area. She loves her county and is thankful to be able to do so while celebrating the culture of her birth.

Shannon Braun

Shannon is the ultimate collaborator, and has made it her mission to make Cincinnati more dementia-inclusive. Despite starting her newly formed role right as the COVID pandemic broke, Shannon never gave up on her vision to educate the masses about dementia.

She routinely is offering education about effective ways to support individuals with dementia; including but not limited to educating Cincinnati police department, church leaders, museum docents, local musicians, movement instructors, healthcare providers, etc. Because of her previous role as the Early Stage Coordinator for the Alzheimer’s Association, Shannon has a special soft spot for individuals in the early stages of their dementia journey. As a result, she has built several social engagement programs, specifically intended for individuals that are still very capable yet navigating a new dementia diagnosis. She has partnered with UC’s Memory Disorders Clinic & the Alzheimer’s Association to offer quarterly early-stage support groups for caregivers and their loved ones with a new dementia diagnosis.

As if that wasn’t enough, Shannon has teamed up with a local ballroom dance instructor to offer “Dancing to Remember” ballroom dancing classes for those navigating a dementia journey. She is also collaborating with the local museums (Contemporary Art Center, Cincinnati Art Museum, & Taft Museum) to offer “With Art in Mind” a monthly museum tour specifically designed for individuals with dementia.

It is clear that connection is of great importance to Shannon, ensuring individuals still feel connected despite their diagnosis. And the icing on the cake is that Shannon & ERS have obtained grant funding so these programs/services are all offered free of charge. Cincinnati is beyond blessed to have Shannon Braun in its corner!

Meet Lisa Legters

One of the more recent additions to the APA board is Lisa Legters. When she joined the board, Lisa hit the ground running. She is currently the APA Events Chair, putting together all of the APA Networking Events and so much more. Here's a little more about Lisa.

Tell us about your what you do and how you help the community.

I have been the Program Director for Creative Aging Cincinnati since the fall of 2015. We are a small nonprofit organization that pairs members such as retirement communities, nursing homes, adult day programs and senior centers with artists who provide educational, wellness and arts programs to older adults. What I love most about my job is working with a diverse group of professionals in the field and some very interesting artists. By matching the right musician, speaker, or wellness instructor to the customer, we are positively impacting the lives of seniors. In my early career, I was an Activity Director in both an adult day program and later a retirement community, so I bring those experiences into my current role. It has been a rewarding job.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go money no object?

I would love to travel to Paris, France or Rome and see the Vatican one day.

Tell us about yourself and family.

My husband Jeff and I have been married for 25 years and have four children – Nick and Daniel are both at UC, Jennifer is a senior at Lakota East and our youngest, Chris is a freshman. We live in West Chester. Our family has traveled nearly every summer to support Jeff as part of the barbershop international contest – we all love to watch him perform.

Nick and Chris have both taken part in marching band – which has also been a lot of fun. The kids talked us into getting a cat in the fall of 2019, and now I am Piper’s “person”. I like to joke that she is my administrative assistant, as I work from home and she likes to walk across my laptop!! I also have been a catechist at our church, teaching second graders. This has been a lovely ministry. I love to cook, bake, read and am an avid walker.

What was the last book you read?

I am in a book club that started more than 45 years ago. I joined with a dear friend before my daughter, now almost 18, was born. I love these women in the group, and we read some pretty awesome books. The last one was “The One Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot”. So good!! I loved the author’s writing and honesty – and the relationship between the two characters. And if audiobooks count, I technically am listening to the podcast “The Catechism in a Year” with Fr. Mike Schmitz. It is inspirational and complex book for sure.

Anything else you would like to share?

I am looking forward to a great year of networking with others in the Association for Professionals in Aging.

Meet Tracey Collins

It's kind of silly to title this entry "Meet Tracey Collins," because Tracey is one of the most visible advocates for seniors in our community. The long-time former CEO of Cincinnati Area Senior Services has recently embarked on a new phase of her career. Beginning in January, she will be the president-elect of the APA Board of Trustees. Here is a little more about Tracey.

Tell us what you do and how you help the community.

I have worked in the nonprofit space for 38 years. For the past 22 years, I was the CEO of Cincinnati Area Services until the organization merged with Meals on Wheels of Southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky.

My plan has always been to step down from a leadership role to return to my social work roots and passion of working directly with seniors. My second act career begins now with WellBe Senior Medical as their Master Social Worker. I am excited about their philosophy of bringing medical services to seniors with compassion and care. This fits my philosophy and values for a service delivery model overall better care.

Tell us about your work career?

I started my career by working as a child protective investigator in Kentucky. I worked with Children and Families for 16 years before I began working in the aging community. I became a caregiver for my grandmother and my passion for advocacy began at that point. The system seemed too difficult to navigate. I love to hear the stories the seniors tell. If I can make their experience easier or a caregiver's experience easier, then I have done my job.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

To be honest, I am a homebody. We recently moved by the lake and love spending days out on the lake. My husband and I have decided when we travel we would like to get in an RV and travel the backroads, stop and explore the shops, and mom and pop restaurants.

Tell us a little more about you.

My husband and I live in Liberty, Indiana near Brookville Lake with our two dogs. I have two grown children and two grandchildren, ages five and 18 months – they call me Gigi. Our home is the family lake house where everyone gathers for all events and that is my passion. I like to entertain and host events. I read, garden and enjoy spending days on the lake in the summer.

What is your go-to restaurant?

My husband and I love to cook together, and we live in the middle of nowhere so we really don't have a lot of choices. I do love all things Mexican.

What do you love about the APA?

This is my second time on the Board and my favorite things are the networking and the relationships I have made over the years.

What would you do if you were not working?

I would spend more time with friends, hang out with my grandchildren, volunteer, and of course, spend lazy days on the lake.

Meet Tiffany Santos

Current APA (and Board) member Tiffany Santos is with Otterbein Senior Life, where she is a Healthcare Navigator. Here is a little more about Tiffany.

Tell us about what you do and how you help the community.
I am the Healthcare Navigator for Otterbein SeniorLife. We offer skilled and long-term care in a unique small house setting. We have locations in Springboro, Middletown, Lebanon, Maineville, Loveland, and Union Township. My role is to work with the hospitals and the community to help navigate all referrals. I love to be able to market our small house concept and educate providers and families on a different type of skilled nursing facility.

Tell us about your work career. How long have you been involved? What brought you into this work? What do you love most?
I have worked in SNF’s for the last 5 years. I have always had an interest in health care, but hate the sight of blood and am a fainter. I searched for many years for my path and a way to assist and actually fell into a role in a SNF admissions role and the passion grew from that day forward. Over the years I was able to advance from an internal role to an external marketing role and love to be able to educate the community on what Otterbein has to offer.

If you could travel anywhere in the world where would it be?
I would love to visit the Maldives.

Tell us about yourself and family.
I am originally from The Plains, OH and moved to Cincinnati in 2012. I have been married to my husband Shane for 7 years, I am a bonus mom to his 3 wonderful daughters ages 20, 17, and 12 and also a fur-mama to a 13 year old mutt and 4 year old English bulldog. Our 12 year old plays travel softball, so most of my time is spent at the ball park, I also enjoy working out and have a guilty pleasure of watching any reality TV show.

What is your go-to restaurant?
Pretty much any pizza place will satisfy me.

What do I enjoy about being a member of APA?
I love the connections it has allowed me to make, and to know I am surrounded by amazing people who all share the same passions it just a great feeling.

What do I do when I am not working?
If I am not working you will find me at the gym or softball fields, or I will more than likely be relaxing on my couch!!

Meet Rachel Hodesh

Long-time APA member Rachel Hodesh is owner of Senior LifeCare Consultants. She has been serving Greater Cincinnati and Dayton since 1997.

Tell us about your what you do and how you help the community.

I am a Life Care Manager and owner of Senior LifeCare Consultants. We are a guide and advocate for seniors and their loved ones. Our role is to support and educate, providing care management to clients and their families. This may be through referrals, support with home care or during a doctor’s visit. We assist the community by supporting the senior, assisting to keeping them safe and providing them with referrals linking them to other professionals in the community.

Tell us about your work career. How long have you been involved? What brought you into this line of work? What do you love most?

I am a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator with a Master’s in Health and Human Services Administration. I began my career in the activities department at Glen Manor in Bond Hill (I was a senior in high school). Since then, I have worked in Group Homes, Food Pantries, Housing, Adult Day, Home Health, Retirement Communities and now as a Life Care Manager. I miss the days of walking the halls, holding a hand, and singing with residents. I miss working late, running the “laundry machines” or “washing dishes.” Those were the moments when you felt like you made a difference.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go if money was no object?

Venice, Italy or Capri (Gulf of Naples).

What is your biggest inspiration in life or in your job? What do you enjoy most about your work?

My inspiration is to serve older adults by improving their overall quality of life. I enjoy the small meaningful conversations and impacts I have with working with my clients.

Tell us about yourself and family (kids, pets, other involvement in the community):

I have two sons: Noah is 18 and Aaron is 16. Noah will be starting at UC in the Fall and Aaron is a Junior at Sycamore. I have a partner of three years, Joey, and he has three kids (18, 16 and 15) so we are quite the spectacle when we go out! We “share” a dog – he has the cat (I am allergic). My family and I are very close which is great for my sons.

I am the VP of Development for the Wyoming School Foundation, active with 55 North on their Marketing and Soiree Committee. Most recently I have become involved with SAAG (Cincinnati Senior Advocacy Action Group) which has been great!

Where is your “go-to” restaurant in Cincinnati?

That is tough. When I lived in Wyoming we would go to Tela. Since I moved to Pleasant Ridge, I am learning new spots. If I had to choose a “place to meet” most people know I love First Watch – there is something for everyone.

What do you enjoy most about being involved with the APA?

Learning from my colleagues. The vast experience of professionals in this group is astounding, so the monthly events are something I always enjoy attending.

What do you enjoy doing when not working?

Working on my new home, taking walks in the neighborhood and spending time with my nieces.

Meet Zaire Sims

Zaire Sims is with Meals on Wheels of Southwest Ohio and Greater Cincinnati. She is also a current APA Board member and a past recipient of our annual scholarship! Here's a little more about Zaire.

Tell us about your what you do and how you help the community.

I am currently a service coordinator with Meals on Wheels of Southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky. I am a direct contact for older adults in low-income housing. I provide educational, health, and social programs to the residents. I also assist with referrals to community resources and benefit comprehension as needed.

Tell us about your work career. How long have you been involved? What brought you into this line of work? What do you love most?

I am Licensed Master Social Worker. I graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 2020 with a Master's Degree in Social Work and from The Ohio State University in 2017 with a Bachelors of Sciences in Social Work. I have 5 years of experience in the social work field ranging from outpatient and inpatient mental health, and service to older adults. I have had adversity while growing up and learned the importance of helping others. I enjoy being an advocate for older adults and their needs.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go if money was no object?

I would love to backpack across Europe.

What is your biggest inspiration in life or in your job? What do you enjoy most about your work?

My inspiration is to serve older adults by improving their overall quality of life. I enjoy the small meaningful conversations and impacts I have with working with my residents.

Tell us about yourself and family (kids, pets, other involvement in the community):

I am a fur-mama. I have two cats, Fari and Zoe and a dog, Coco. I am an inaugural ASA Rise Fellow Graduate.

Where is your “go-to” restaurant in Cincinnati?

I hate to add fuel to the Cincinnati Chili debate, but my significant other has converted to root for the Skyline side. We eat skyline every Friday.

What do you enjoy most about being involved with the APA?

I enjoyed the community APA has. It is nice to be around professionals who share a similar passion for advocating for older adults. I love how APA supports students who are interested in the field of aging.

What do you enjoy doing when not working?

Definitely, sleeping in my hammock or flowing down a river in a kayak.

What is the last book you read?

Becoming by Michelle Obama.

Meet Yvonne Scheiderer

Long-time APA (and Board) member Yvonne Scheiderer is a Realtor with Huff Realty. She is a Senior Real Estate Specialist (SRES), and has been serving Greater Cincinnati residents since 1998.

Tell us a little about your work and career:
I've been a licensed Realtor since 1998. Prior to that I was the administrator of a Substance Abuse Prevention Program that served adults whose children were enrolled in the Head Start Program. I was later the recipient of an award presented by former Governor George Voinovich for my work in launching the "Getting A Head Start Against Drugs" initiative. Later that same year I bought my first home and was immediately intrigued by the real estate profession.

What do you love most about your job?
The people I meet (literally from all over the world), identifying a need and working toward the solution, the satisfaction in being part of a truly life changing process, the many friendships I've made over the years!

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go if money was no object?
I would go to Australia and to New Zealand. So far, I've visited all 50 states, as well as 14 foreign countries. In 2018 I traveled to Italy (Florence, Vatican City, Rome, and Venice) all by myself!

What is your biggest inspiration in life or in your job?
I'm a helper. I learned that from my mother, but I didn't realize the impact she made on my career until after she passed away at age 57. She had been an activities director in a nursing home (that's what they were called back then) when I was little and she absolutely adored the blessing of spending time listening and learning, and enhancing the quality of life for those she served. When she couldn't find a guest speaker or entertainer, she'd wake my dad (who worked the night shift) and have him bring his guitar to her community, and he'd sing and play music (quite often)! She loved making a difference and lightening their spirits.

Tell us about yourself and family (kids, pets, other involvement in the community):
My son just graduated with honors from Ohio University with a Bachelors in Business Administration. He started his career as a data analyst just a few days later. I also have a daughter and a son-in-love. They met at (THE) Ohio State University in 2008 and will celebrate their 7-year wedding anniversary in June. She works for a healthcare advertising agency and her husband is in risk management with a major bank. Everyone currently lives locally (and I love that so much). I have an 18-pound poodle named Bella and an 85-pound Bernese/Australian Shepherd mix named Elvis.

I am in my 6^th year with the APA. I also hold a designation as an SRES (Seniors Real Estate Specialist) and a designation as an ABR (Accredited Buyer Representative). Last month I completed Fair Housing Officer Training. I served on the Realtor/Lawyer Forum through the Cincinnati Area Board of Realtors until 2020. I've also had the great fortune of receiving multiple sales awards over the years. I previously spent time on the air at Cincinnati Association For The Blind and Visually impaired.

What is your "go-to" restaurant in Cincinnati?
I'm always up for trying new restaurants, but my favorite food is Mediterranean. My favorite drink is coffee....I mean I seriously love good coffee!

What do you enjoy most about being involved with the APA?
I have met some of the most incredible people with the most loving hearts through the APA! I love watching people tirelessly working together for one common goal. For the past several years, I've been on the committee that chooses the APA educational scholarships, and year after year I'm in awe of the applications we receive. It's so difficult to choose who receives the scholarship money because there are so, so many heaven sent angels among us! The people I meet through APA are definitely what I enjoy most about APA!

What do you enjoy doing when not working?
I started running a few years ago and before I knew it was running half marathons. I have a big birthday this Fall and I'm making plans to complete a full marathon....we'll see how that goes. I'm a season ticket holder at The Cincinnati Playhouse In The Park. I come from a family of 5 active daughters (and a boatload of relatives), so there's rarely a dull moment.

What is the last book you read?
My bible from cover to cover (it took me almost two years)!

Meet Earlene Dula

Earlene Dula is Co-owner of Transitions Care Concierge. Her business specializes in assisting the aging and disabled population with downsizing, decluttering and transitioning to senior care living.

Tell us a little about your work and career:
My background is in social services, organizational leadership. My love for those categorized as our most vulnerable population has always been the driving force behind my career choices. I was compelled to start Transitions Care Concierge along with business partner after losing my mom to Alzheimer’s. My family and I were left to manage her property, personal items and much more with little to no help. Transitions Care Concierge is a business you call before the loss and after. We cater our services to the needs of our clients.

What do you love most about your job?
What I enjoy the most and what keeps me pushing to become more and more involved with aging community and their families is the joy we receive from helping those in need during a challenging and often overwhelming time. We love easing the burden of families and loved ones through support and hands on services.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go if money was no object?
Australia – I want to visit the Outback!

What is your biggest inspiration in life or in your job?
My biggest inspiration in life is my desire to do something meaningful to impact the lives of others in a positive way. Transitions Care Concierge allows me to do both of those things and that feeds my joy.

Tell us about yourself and family (kids, pets, other involvement in the community):
I have a son whom I am very proud of and who makes me laugh almost daily, I have a business partner who shares my passion for our business and pushes me to think beyond the now. I have a cat, who followed me home one day and never left, and a dog who is wonderful.

I am member of the Alzheimer’s Diversity Council, and a CPR Instructor for the American Heart Association. These committees allow me to interact with various people on different levels in our community.

What is your "go-to" restaurant in Cincinnati?
I don’t really have one, I prefer to cook at home. I cook with love and I’ve found that my food is a reflection of me and what I want to put out in the world (something good that entices all the senses) and brings people together.

What do you enjoy most about being involved with the APA?
I enjoy being a part of an organization whose sole purpose is to bring together like minded people for the betterment and enrichment of others. I can feel the sincerity with this organization and that fuels me to continue being involved and seeking to help as much as I can and wherever I can. I appreciate their passion for educating others in the community. What I know is those with a desire to educate others must first educate themselves and this is an organization that I want to be a part of.

What do you enjoy doing when not working?
I enjoy binge watching TV series; especially those that allow me for a short time to shut my brain down and decompress. I enjoy reading for the same reason.

What is the last book you read?
It’s Not All Downhill from Here: A Novel by Terry McMillan

Purposeful Planning Program

As the visionary behind the Purposeful Planning Program, Kristin Cooley leaned into serving those in need. Kristin forged partnerships and opportunities that enabled her to launch her private practice in 2020.

The Purposeful Planning Program provides a much-needed free service to our community through their support from the Giving Voice Foundation and Alois Foundation. It not only helps to connect people with helpful resources and provides a written action plan, but also provides support service and continues on in a therapy role if needed. Dozens of patients recount the positive experience and how lost they had felt before connecting with this program and how lost they had felt before connecting with the program.

Kristin's ability to understand the issues, communicate effectively and compassionately, and provide valuable education to the families and loved ones, is the driving force of the program's success. Thanks to The Giving Voice and its financial support of the program, Kristin is able to offer services free of charge to the families. This program fills a major void in the care of those with cognitive impairment and can serve as a template for wider application into our community. The need for it, unfortunately, will continue to grow for years to come.

Lisa has spent her 40 year career in the field of aging. Her varied and wide-reaching career began as a candy-striper. After obtaining her Master of Education in Counseling from the University of Louisville, her roles included Director of Social Services at various long-term care facilities, Executive Director for dementia-specific assisted living facilities, and the Education Coordinator for the Greater Cincinnati Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.

For the past several years, Lisa has been an Elder Care Coordinator with The Law Practice of Dennison Keller. Lisa's expertise in dementia care has been a tremendous asset when dealing with family members of those suffering from Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia.

Lisa was also a mentor for co-workers and a trusted source for quality information. Her kind, caring approach has helped numerous residents, clients and fellow colleagues throughout her career.

Effective December 31, 2021, Lisa retired. Her knowledge and expertise will be missed, and we wish her nothing but a most fulfilling retirement!

Diane started her career in 1975 as a Certified Nurses Aid, and completed her degree in Licensed Practical Nursing at Miami University The over achiever that she is, she completed her degree in 12 months instead of 18 months in 1984.

Diane is now at StoryPoint and again surrounds herself with quality nurses that have followed her because of her servant leadership style and overall advocacy for the residents. She asked if she could have the office in the Memory Care Unit because they are her light, happiness, and they are the most vulnerable population.

Diane has seen many changes in the nursing industry and has never wavered from her core values of placing the residents needs first. She exemplifies every attribute for the outstanding Leader in the field of aging. Diane has dedicated her life to helping others rather it be the residents, staff or her family friends. She has touched the lives of so many and I am proud to nominate her for this recognition award.

Meet David Flautt

David Flautt is the owner of Assisted Living Locators of Greater Cincinnati, a senior living placement business serving SW Ohio and Northern Kentucky.

Assisted Living Locators is a national network of advisors that serves communities with local advisors. David focuses on Southwestern Ohio and Northern Kentucky, and he currently has one other advisor on his team.

Tell us a little about your work and your career.
It’s funny. I graduated with a BS in Health Services Administration, but ended up going to work for a bank in Cincinnati as a Credit Analyst. Let’s say the corporate stiffness where you could not leave your suit coat to go to the bathroom did not suit me well at the time. But I soon found my way into retirement plan administration and institutional investments and advisory with Macy’s, Fidelity, and several large banks spanning 25 years – still wearing suits. Several years ago, I found my way into what is now my current second career - a senior living advisor focusing on Southwestern Ohio and Northern Kentucky.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go money no object?
Greece...a boat on the coast with a chef sounds like a good start.

What is your biggest inspiration in life or in your job? What do you enjoy most about your work?
What I do now is much different work in many ways than the corporate world. I enjoy meeting new families, learning a new industry, and I like the flexibility this affords me personally in terms of work/life balance.

Do you have a funny story about your work? How do you make your work day meaningful or inspirational?
One time I met with Linda Shaw when she was in sales at a local community. She grilled me and I thought to myself, "breaking into this business is going to be harder than I thought." Now Linda and I are cool, but I remember that day.

Tell us about yourself and family.
I am married to Amanda Orlando Flautt, a local radio host on WARM 98 mornings. We have a 19-year-old daughter Athena, who is transitioning into college, and a 13-year-old son Parker, who is enrolled at SCPA. He is a fierce baseball pitcher and my partner in crime.

Do you have a special message to share with your neighbors or community?
A special message might be to take chances especially when you're young. But it’s never too late to try something new and take a chance and go in a different direction.

Meet Kristy Matheson

We would like you to meet Kristy Matheson, hailing from Germantown, OH. She is a 1998 graduate from Wright State University with a degree in Social Work. Her dad is a pastor, and her mom is an English teacher and social worker, which are similar to the footsteps Kristy followed.

Kristy has worked in the field of hospice for 12 years, most recently, helping to build Affinity Care of Ohio, a compassionate and caring hospice. She and a group of other hospice passionate people built the organization from the ground up. She has done many things in the field, but can honestly say that hospice work, completely changed her heart and gave her a newly instilled passion for life that she felt was lacking.

Additionally, Kristy has a training company called Professional Education Connection where she and her training partner have written more than 20 programs, and trained hundreds of people in the human services field.

Her work in hospice taught her that life is short, and it is meant to be lived fully and completely. She was so inspired by the stories of the ones whom she met along the way, that it inspired Kristy to start a group called Adventure Chicks. This group is meant to encourage women of all ages and experience levels to step out of their comfort zone and live life not on the sidelines, but fully engage in all that life has to offer.

If Kristy could travel anywhere, it would be Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland. It’s a town in the Swiss Alps that is surrounded by waterfalls, and the pictures alone can take your breath away. She plans to make it there one day.

She has one piece of advice to share and that would be to not wait until your kids are grown to do things, until there is more money in retirement, or until everything falls into place to really pursue those things that bring you joy. Tomorrow is not promised, so be intentional with today. Great advice!

Kristy’s greatest blessing is her family. She is married to a great guy, Rick, for 20 years, and they have three children. Two are in college, and one starts the third grade this fall, so her life is busy. She also enjoys hiking, yoga, eating out and doing absolutely nothing by a pool.

Kristy is also the Education Chair for APA, and we are so grateful and blessed to have her on our team. She has been responsible for the CEs offered by APA in 2020-21, as well as other educational events, which have all been very well attended. She would love to have you work with her on her committee so reach out to her and get to know this fun loving person! The APA has awesome members!!

Meet Maria Deneau

Maria Deneau works for The Alois Alzheimer Center as Director of Admissions & Marketing. The Center provides assisted living through certified nursing (total care) for all dementia residents in a long-term care setting. Specializing in dementia and behaviors, The Center was the first all dementia community in the United States when it opened in 1987.

Tell us a little about your work and your career. I have been in senior healthcare since 2007, when my Mom was showing signs of Alzheimer’s. I have experience in skilled/rehab nursing, home health & hospice, mobile physician group marketing and clinical nutrition. I am a Certified Dementia Practitioner (some may say I’m certifiable, but I’m okay with that ;). I love when I make a difference in a family’s life and when I can go stomp on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C.!

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go money no object? Italy and South Korea

What is your biggest inspiration in life or in your job? What do you enjoy most about your work? My work is a calling. I am a public policy advocate (nationally & locally) for Alzheimer’s legislation and I do very much enjoy helping families navigate this “industry,” for lack of a better word. It has become a big industry and not all of it is great. It’s a huge bandwidth for people to learn about when placing a loved one or just needing resources. This is why I am excited to serve as advocacy chair for the APA! So much to consider with such a strong and diverse group! Advocacy means different things for different people and groups, so I want to narrow that down for APA members and help us cultivate our place in the Cincinnati area for senior advocacy and for our members. As far as inspiration, I am always inspired by my nurses and by families and other professionals who work for our seniors.

Do you have a special message to share with your neighbors or community? The Alois Alzheimer Center is very unique in what we offer for care. We are the best at what we do and there is really not another community like it. We are the only all dementia community with assisted living and nursing and we specialize in outward behaviors. Transfer trauma is the biggest thing that I see when admitting a loved one. Even from just their home environment, there is a lot of adjustments to consider because of the disease process. So add on top of that a failed move in at another community with possible hospital stays, etc. It is really very important to consider placing your loved one into a community with a lot of experience and training.

Do you have a funny story about your work? How do you make your work day meaningful or inspirational? Just taking a walk around the community is meaningful to remind myself why I do this. There are so many funny stories…I remember a resident who found comfort in a baby doll (she was a mom and grandma of many). She was very sweet and took good care of her “baby”, even dressing her up in baby bonnets. One day I found her singing to her baby and it was just so sweet. I asked her “How is your baby today?” She looked up at me without missing a beat and said “It’s just a doll, you idiot!” Hahahahaha- we both laughed pretty hard and she wasn’t sure what she was laughing at after a while ;)

Tell us about yourself and family: I am from Cincinnati’s west side originally, but now live with my hubby Al in Eden Park- we love it. I have one son, 2 bonus daughters and 1 bonus grandson! They are all good lookin kids and they keep us hopping. I am pretty adventurous and go cage diving with Great White Sharks every fall 260 miles off the coast of Mexico. I love music of all genres, hiking and water just about everywhere. I also love to cook and go out to eat! As far as other involvement, I am also in The Giving Voice Collaborative and serve on THEIR advocacy team!

Any additional information you would like to share? I am a published author of curated articles in The Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement and The Sunday Paper, both run by Maria Shriver’s media company where I serve as one of her ambassadors. I have met her and have been to her offices in LA and was on The Today Show in October 2019 as her special guest. She is my celebrity inspiration!

Meet Annie Novak

Annie works for Episcopal Retirement Services, Inc., as the Director of Case Management, servicing the needs for the Marjorie P. Lee and Dupree communities. Her job involves managing all skilled and custodial admissions, goals of care, insurance certifications, discharge planning and care transitions once patients discharge from the community to their home. It is a multi-faceted role, never a dull moment and very diverse each and every day which is what she loves.

Annie grew up in a large Irish Catholic family in the Chicagoland area and it was the expectation that you get a part-time job at the age of 15. Her mom's friend was an administrator of a nursing home and offered her a job as a nurses' aide and the rest is history. She graduated from Rush University in Chicago and has been a nurse for 36 years. She has worked in Med Surgery, in Acute Rehab for head and spine patients, a consultant to the industry for workers comp reemployment, an executive recruiter for healthcare execs, and for the past nine years as the Director of Case Management at Episcopal Retirement Services, Inc.

COVID had an impact on a scheduled trip she and her husband had planned to Ireland this past fall with her siblings and their spouses, but plans are to reschedule to 2022. As a lover of Italian red wines, Annie also dreams of a vacation traveling through the Italian countryside from the Italian Alps down through Tuscany sampling the wine, food and culture of this beautiful country.

Many people that Annie knows inspire her in life every single day and there are too many to even try to pick one or a few. But, in her job, she is blessed to have a vocation that inspires her and allows her to feel a sense of purpose and true meaning. She loves helping people and making a difference. She empowers elders to know that they have a powerful voice and the ability to make choices about their treatment goals and future. She values working for an organization that promotes person centered choices and enables the staff to be creative in assisting seniors to achieve their goals.

Annie and her husband, Bill, live in West Chester. They have 8 adult kids (1 in LA, 3 in Chicago, 1 in DC and 3 in Cincinnati). Two of her daughters are married, but no grandbabies yet (hint, hint) BUT, she has 4 grand dogs! Bill and Annie love to travel locally and in nearby states camping in their Teardrop Trailer. They plan to expand their travels in the US and Canada in their future retirement. She loves to make new friends so reach out to her any time! Meet Mary Mendel

Meet Mary Mendel, Community Liaison for Family Bridges Home Care. Mary came to Family Bridges in August of 2019 after a long career in banking and transportation. She loves serving families and partnering with others in healthcare to provide care and resources for families. Mary also enjoys educating families about the options for care for seniors, their families and those living with disabilities.

Plus, there is always so much more to learn and share to expand her horizons to keep her informed and on her toes in healthcare, and, the challenges of COVID in 2020 were no exception. Each day, Mary tries to do something to help someone else. It might be as simple as making an introduction, giving referrals to trusted partners or just sharing valuable information.

When asked if she had a special message to share with her neighbors or community, she shared her favorite Google review:

"What I liked hearing the most, when initially talking with Mary Mendel from Family Bridges, is that their caregivers are their biggest asset. And that they go to lengths (interviews, background checks, etc.) when hiring caregivers. We needed assistance right away, and the Family Bridges Team made it happen. We had a number of caregivers at the start, and all were very friendly, professional, and focused on care for the patient. Their organization and communication was top notch. But most importantly their interaction with the family and care for my Mom was genuine and caring. I would definitely recommend Family Bridges to those in need."

Mary celebrates her 25th wedding anniversary this year with her husband, Chris. They love living on the west side of Cincinnati with their 2 cats. Both are very active in their church as praise leaders, and both have a love of music. Mary is also very crafty and has shared her hand sewn masks and handmade chocolates at APA events in support of our scholarship fund raisers.

Meet Judy Singleton

One of the current APA board members is Judy Singleton. Judy is a lifelong resident of Cincinnati and resides in Blue Ash.

Prior to working in higher education, Judy was a social worker in a nursing home, a hospital, and home health care. She continued her education while she was in the field and has been teaching social work in higher education over the past 20 years. She currently is at the University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College.

Helping students connect to the careers to which they aspire is always rewarding. And, it is especially gratifying when students are interested in working with older adults. Better yet, it is wonderful to connect students to agencies and workers in the field of aging. Many students have not considered a career in the field of aging. Being exposed to the opportunities and the incredible work that can be done is sometimes a game changer for students to then pursue a career in aging.

Q: What do you like most about being a member of the APA?
APA provides such a wonderful learning opportunity and means to connect with kindred souls. Members from such a variety of settings share their time and talents to ultimately help older adults in our community.

Q. What do you do when you’re not working?
Gardening…and then more gardening. I love it!

Q. What is the last book you read?
I read a lot of books for work, but the last book I read for pleasure was “Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking” by Susan Cain.

Q. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
The Scandinavian countries, particularly Sweden. It is amazing to read about their work/family benefit structure. I would love to learn more and see it in action.

Meet Emily Elma

Emily Elma, LISW, CDP is a current board member and serves on the Advocacy, Events, and Scholarship Committees. Emily moved to Cincinnati to pursue her Bachelor of Science in Social Work at Xavier University, went on to earn her Master’s Degree in Social Work at the University of Cincinnati, and decided to make her home in Cincinnati.

Emily has combined her passion for working with the mentally ill and aging population in her current role as Clinical Liaison for Blueridge Vista Health and Wellness.

She recently obtained her Certified Dementia Practitioner certification and has enjoyed co-facilitating support groups for our unsung heroes...those in caregiving roles.

Emily does her best to bring kindness, silliness and curiosity to all that she does.

Q: What do you do when you’re not working?
A: I perform with 2 improv comedy teams (virtual performances for the time being). One of the groups, Remember to Laugh, partners with the Alzheimer’s Association to perform shows for those with dementia and their care partners.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: I have always dreamed of going to Spain. They have this lovely pastime called paseo, where they stroll, arm in arm, through the city streets at night. Who’s in?

Q: What do you like most about being a member of the APA?
A: The APA is such a wonderful, embracing organization that creates connectivity for its members and the community at large.

Meet Rob Jutze

One of our current Board members is Rob Jutze. Rob is a lifelong resident of Cincinnati and he currently resides in Kenwood.

For the past 20 years, Rob has owned Senior Impact Publications, which produces the Older Adults Resource Guide in Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, and several other cities in Ohio and Kentucky.

One of the most rewarding parts of Rob’s work is his interaction with the senior community, especially the local Area Agencies on Aging which distribute the Older Adults guides. It is fulfilling to know that the Agencies – as well as the seniors and caregivers where the guides are published – find the guide a valuable tool that helps educate and empower those who are not sure where to turn when it comes to the care of seniors.

Q: What do you enjoy most about being involved in the APA?
A: My membership has allowed me to get to know and network with people who are devoted to the care of seniors and promoting issues that benefit them.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: I’d love to visit Australia.

Q: What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?
A: I love spending time with my family, especially traveling. We’ve made a point of traveling to all parts of the country with our kids (the highlight being a 2-1/2 week car trip out west) but we have a true soft spot for Harbor Springs, Michigan. I also enjoy golfing, running (though not as much as I should), and watching the Reds and Xavier basketball.

Q: What is your favorite local place to go?
A: Since I grew up in this town in the 70’s, to me there’s no better place to be than the ballpark.

Q: What is your favorite local food?
A: I will never turn down Italianette pizza, followed closely by the Clubhouse sandwich at Mt. Adams Bar & Grill.

A: Crowded House

Q: What is the last book you read?
A: The Cloudbuster Nine: The Untold Story of Ted Williams and the Baseball Team That Helped Win World War II by Anne R. Keene (I’m a sucker for non-fiction books about baseball).

Agencies Work Together to Serve Older Adults During COVID-19 Pandemic

As we all know, the segment of our population hit hardest by the recent pandemic – and one of the most vulnerable – is older adults. Even something as basic as getting a meal has become a challenge. With most seniors being told to stay home, it has become more and more difficult for them to receive proper nutrition. Fortunately, local organizations have stepped in to meet the increased demand.

Realizing the impact COVID-19 could have on older adults, our Area Agency on Aging – Council on Aging of Southwestern Ohio (COA) – and its service providers, began preparing in January.

“We learned from past emergency situations that food quickly becomes an urgent need for older adults,” said Council on Aging CEO, Suzanne Burke. “We didn’t want supply chain or staffing issues to interfere with our ability to provide meals to older adults, and we knew that they might be asked to shelter-in-place for quite a while.”

COA’s intuition was spot on. When Ohio Governor Mike DeWine issued the stay-at-home order in March, COA began hearing from older adults who were afraid to go out for groceries and other necessities. Others found themselves without their regular support network. Many who contacted COA had never before needed help.

Working with its provider network, including two local agencies, Cincinnati Area Senior Services (CASS) and Meals on Wheels of SWO & NKY (formerly Wesley Community Services), COA quickly adapted services.

CASS and Meals on Wheels have stepped up helped assemble and deliver 15,000 emergency food boxes to home-delivered meals recipients. And seniors who previously attended congregate meals began receiving “carry out” meals. Another 500 older adults began temporarily receiving home-delivered meals due to the pandemic.

Fortunately, throughout the pandemic, regular meal delivery has not been disrupted and seniors have been getting the meals and nutrition they need.

But the extra meal deliveries mean providers, their staff and volunteers have been working hard. In a typical month, CASS provides approximately 35,000 meals to older adults in Hamilton County. Meals on Wheels serves approximately 55,000 meals monthly in Hamilton County, as well as Clermont, Butler and Warren counties (and Northern Kentucky).

Once the pandemic hit, CASS saw the need for meals increase dramatically. In April, the agency delivered over 60,000 meals. Likewise, Meals on Wheels has dramatically increased deliveries, as they provided over 100,000 meals.

COA, CASS and Meals on Wheels have partnered in out-of-the-box ways throughout this pandemic to ensure the nutritional needs of older adults in this region are met.

For example, when a severe storm left several senior housing communities without power for more than 24 hours, COA and providers responded within hours to provide food and ice to residents in the buildings.

With additional funding through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (H.R. 748), also known as the CARES Act, COA was able to expand meal programs to serve more seniors in need during the pandemic.

“When the pandemic began to spread, COA understood the critical need for food to keep seniors health and safe,” said Randy Quisenberry, Manager of Procurement and Provider Services with COA and a board member of the Association for Professionals in Aging. “COA put together alternative meal programs in case any disruptions in food delivery arose. This included a 14-day emergency box with shelf stable food – of which 75,000 were delivered. Additionally, we wanted a back-up kitchen in case of a disruption of service like another outbreak or supply chain issues with inventory. We reached out to LaRosa’s, Taste of Belgium and Frisch’s, and all three agreed to help deliver over 10,000 restaurant meals to senior buildings in Greater Cincinnati.”

“While we’re focused on providing food, we also want to bring comfort to older adults and let them know they are not forgotten,” added Burke. “We hope a special meal from Taste of Belgium, LaRosa’s or Frisch’s is a welcome change of pace for older adults who are experiencing the effects of social isolation.”

The meals have been a comfort. Almost immediately, COA, CASS and Meals on Wheels began receiving thank you notes and voicemails from older adults who’d felt forgotten and depressed by the monotony of the pandemic.

All this would not have been possible without the dedicated employees of CASS, Meals on Wheels of SWO & NKY and Council on Aging. As the Area Agency on Aging for Southwestern Ohio, COA administers the Title III meal program and works with providers such as CASS and Meals on Wheels of SWO & NKY to ensure older adults and people with disabilities receive the nutritional support they need in order to remain independent in our communities.

I know that we find ourselves in difficult times and many of our wonderful plans have been forcibly placed on hold but I am confident that we will overcome these troubled waters with a renewed sense of passion for the senior community. Meet Jennifer Roth

Meet Jennifer Roth LSW, CCM, one of the APA current board members and Events Committee Chair.

Jennifer is a resident of Hamilton Ohio, but originally hails from DeSoto, Illinois. Jennifer moved to the Cincinnati area in 1994 after graduating with her Bachelors of Social Work degree from Southern Illinois University. Jennifer has more than 28 years of experience working with seniors, families and children. She is licensed by the state of Ohio Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist Board. She is also a Certified Case Manager.

Jennifer is the Director of Care Management with Trinity Aging Life Advisors. Trinity provides life care management for seniors and individuals with disabilities, serving Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, Louisville and Lexington.

One of the things that Jennifer loves about her position with Trinity Aging Life Advisors is the ability to provide expert advice and guidance to clients and families who are trying to navigate current and future care needs. Also to be an advocate for clients to create the best outcomes that honor their values and preferences, while helping to maintain independence, health and safety.

Q: What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?

A: I LOVE being outdoors! I love to kayak, camp, hike, bike and walk. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends as well.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

A: Bali would be my first choice, but I would love to travel the world and the US. There are so many beautiful places to see!

Q: What do you like most about being a member of the APA?

A: I feel so blessed to be a part of such an amazing organization. I have had the pleasure of meeting so many incredible people from all walks of life with the same goal....advocating for seniors!

One of our current board members is Angela Cotteral. A current resident of Maineville, Ohio, but she originally hails from Youngstown, Ohio.

Angela is Director of Sales & Marketing for Anthology of Blue Ash.

One of the things that Angela loves about her position at Anthology of Blue Ash is the ability to help those looking for a new way of living! She can assist you or your family with Independent or Assisted Living and Memory Care. She is there to make the transition with moving from home into our brand new community as seamless as possible.

Q: What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?
A: I love to spend time with my family, friends and my dog. I play sand volleyball and travel as much as possible.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: I would travel to Italy, France and Ireland.

Q: What do you like most about being involved in the APA?
A: I've been a board member of APA since 2017. I enjoy meeting new people and helping others gain insight on new outlooks on the senior population.

Caregiving in the Workplace Survey

The Council on Aging of Southwestern Ohio launched the Caregiving (COA) in the Workplace Survey to help our region’s employers quantify the impact an aging population has on their employees. We believe this is the first time a survey like this has been undertaken in our region.

Messer Construction helped the COA pilot the survey early in 2019 and since over a dozen employers participate with nearly 1,000 employee survey respondents. The data collected through the survey mirrors what is happening on a national level. The current impact on Greater Cincinnati businesses is staggering.

The COA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing quality of life for older adults, people with disabilities, their families and caregivers. We promote choice, independence, dignity and well-being through a range of services that help people remain in their homes for as long as possible.

Edna grew up in small town America to a large family. Her parents instilled the lesson of service to others, which lead her to becoming a nurse. Edna worked 20 years at Christ Hospital. Edna ended her career as a hospital nurse because she needed something with flexible scheduling looking at the future of having an aging parent needing more assistance in the home. Edna made a decision to become a visiting nurse. This led her to a small home health agency where she worked her way up to become the Administrator/Director of Nursing. Edna is a “senior working for seniors.” She started work at Clermont Senior Services as Director of Home Care and Case Management. She also Supervises Adult Protective Services for Clermont County. Edna says it is a rewarding yet sometimes stressful position but she loves every minute of it.

Edna is on the Steering Committee for the Ohio Human Services Training System which provides education and training for Adult Protective Services for Ohio. She is a current Member of Ohio Coalition for Adult Protective Services. Edna volunteers as Guardian Ad Litem for CASA for Children in Clermont County. She supports Developmentally Delayed Adults by being a nurse advisor for a group residential home in Clermont County.

Bev’s compassion for the senior population was instilled as a child witnessing family members care for her grandmother. Her passion for working with the senior population began while attending Northern Kentucky University. She chose to work at an adult day program for the required practicum hours needed for her degree in Mental Health and Human Services.

Following her graduation in 1999, Bev worked as an Activity Director at Eldermount Adult Day Care, now Bayley Adult Day, for 10 years. Here, she took great pride in scheduling activities, events and trips for the seniors in her care. During this time, she also acquired the Activity Director’s Certification. Continuing her education at what is now the University of Mount St. Joseph, Bev then received her Recreation Therapy Certification. In 2007, she resigned from Bayley to be home with her first child. At that time, she was offered and accepted a new role as the Executive Director of Creative Aging. Considered the best of both worlds, this part time position with a home office enables her to be with her three children while working to make a positive impact in the lives of seniors throughout Greater Cincinnati.

Meet Ruth Anne Van Loon

One of our retiring board members is Ruth Anne Van Loon. Ruth Anne has been on the APA board since 2014 and retires from her board position at the end of 2019. Most recently, Ruth Anne has been the chair of the Scholarship Committee. She has been impressed and gratified to see the commitment of young professionals in training to careers working with older adults. She has also been grateful to be part of this organization that supports students through scholarships.

Originally from Chicago, Ruth Anne moved to Cincinnati more than 25 years ago. She is a professor and Director of the School of Social Work at the University of Cincinnati.

Meet Randy Quisenberry

Randy Quisenberry is a member of the Association for Professionals in Aging, a board member, and chair of Membership and Sponsorship Committee.

Randy chose a career serving the public. After spending 10 years with Butler County Government where he worked with many departments and agencies including Job and Family Services, Children Services, Butler Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, Randy moved to the Council on Aging of Southwestern Ohio (COA). He is the Manager of Procurement and Provider Services.

The COA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing quality of life for older adults, people with disabilities, their families and caregivers. The organization promotes choice, independence, dignity and well-being of seniors through a range of services that help people remain in their homes for as long as possible.

Founded in 1971, the COA is part of the national aging services network and is a state-designated Area Agency on Aging, serving individuals across a multi-county region that includes Butler, Clermont, Clinton, Hamilton and Warren counties, with limited programming in Greene and Montgomery counties. One call to COA links people to the wide variety of agencies, information and programs that serve older adults, people with disabilities and their caregivers.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your work?

I find it extremely rewarding to contribute to services that have a high impact on vulnerable populations. I monitor Service Providers to ensure senior citizens are getting the highest quality care at the lowest cost to serve as many seniors as possible.

Q: What do you enjoy most about being involved in the APA?

A: My membership provided me with the opportunity to network with people, companies, and agencies that share the same commitment in serving seniors.

Q: What do you like to do when you're not at work?

A: I like to garden, golf, and walk - especially on the bike trail.

Meet Board Member Elizabeth Henderson

The APA's newest and youngest board member is Elizabeth Henderson. From the time she was in high school, Elizabeth knew that she wanted to work with seniors. After watching her grandparents go through the aging process, she became passionate about her future field.

Elizabeth is currently a senior at the University of Cincinnati, and is working on her Bachelor's of Social Work degree, as well as her Deaf Studies Certificate. In 2016, Elizabeth began volunteering at Twin Towers, and she now works there as an Activities Specialist.

Q: What do you love most about your job?

A: I love interacting with the residents of Twin Towers, and getting to know them on a personal level.

Q: What do you value most about your membership in the Association for Professionals in Aging?

A: The APA gives me the opportunity to meet new people in different occupations within the aging population.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

A: Hawaii

Q: What do you like to do when you're not at work?

A: I like to go on walks with my dogs, do puzzles, and go to local breweries.

Q: What is your favorite place to eat?

A: My favorite places to eat would be Wings and Rings or Fuago. When I visit my parents in Dayton, Ohio it would have to be Milano’s Pizza.

Meet Member & Board Member, Sylvia Dwertman

Sylvia Dwertman entered the senior care industry as a Marketing Liaison for Visiting Angels Living Assistance Services in 2014 after a 30 year career in air travel.

Visiting Angels is the 2nd largest home health care franchise in the United States, providing in home non-medical care for seniors. Their goal is to help seniors stay in their homes and assist them with the day-to-day activities that we take for granted when we are able and healthy.

Sylvia participated in our Member Q&A. Read her answers below:

Q: What do you like most about Visiting Angels?

A: Mike Schroth, owner, has such a passion for caring for seniors and his dedication to providing services makes me proud to work for him.

Q: What do you enjoy most about the work you do?

A: Representing a company that provides such a valuable service. I enjoy the people I meet and the educational programs I teach.

This past year I became a Certified Laughter Yoga Leader, and, I enjoy taking the gift of laughter to seniors. It’s called laughter yoga because it incorporates the deep breathing of yoga with laughter exercises. Laughter exercises are initiated thru childlike playfulness in a group setting resulting in fake, then real laughter. Laughter Yoga can help increase the oxygen in your blood, lower your blood pressure, feed positive endorphins to your brain, helps with depression and improves your overall well being. The greatest compliment I can be given is “I feel so much better now!” There are many known benefits to laughing, that it truly is “the best medicine.”

Q: What do you enjoy most about your APA Membership?

A: Meeting people and getting to know them. There are so many people working for the seniors trying to provide services that are so valuable to their well being.

Q: What do you like to do when you're not at work?

A: I love to travel, so, I am always planning my next trip. I spend hours researching destinations in order to select my next adventure. I also enjoy playing Pet Rescue on my iPad. I have played it on and off for the past few years, and, I am currently on level 2224. I’ve been stuck on this level for the past month, so if anyone has a tip for completing it, call me!

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you go?

A: I have been blessed to travel the world! The one place I still want to travel to is Australia.

Q: What the last book you read?

A: Obstruction of Justice by O’Shannessey.

Q: What is your favorite quote?

A: Work, save, travel, repeat.

Q; What is your favorite local attraction?

The Cincinati Zoo, especially in the spring.

Meet Our 2019 President

Betsy founded Queen City Transitions in 2008, a senior move management company specializing in helping elders and their families navigate the numerous challenges they face when confronted with the need to downsize, clear out estates and reclaim hoarded spaces. The organization now has 13 employees. It was the first certified senior move management company in the Greater Cincinnati Area.

Betsy was born and grew up in Cincinnati and went to Walnut Hills High School. She graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.A. in Psychology. She has lived in 8 states: Ohio, California, Michigan, Massachusetts, Virginia, Florida, New Mexico and Kentucky. She moved back to Cincinnati in 2007 and then to Covington, KY in 2010.

Queen City Transitions has been a member of the National Association of Senior Move Managers since 2008 and has reached "Diamond Society" status. They specialize in hoarding clean up & support along with move management and estate dispersal. They are also NASMM At Home certified which helps seniors who wish to "age-in-place."

Q: What do you enjoy most about your work?

A: Queen City Transitions makes a difference in the lives of elders and their families. When a client arrives at their new home after QCT has settled them in, they often say, "I don't know what we would have done without you!" That is such a great feeling! I am very proud of our stellar reputation in the community because the bulk of our referrals are from word-of-mouth referrals.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your APA membership?

A: The APA is a unique organization that combines networking, scholarship, educational and CEU events. I enjoy working with other board members who work with seniors in the Greater Cincinnati area. I think we make a difference!

Q: What do you like to do when you're not at work?

A: I am an avid Cincinnati Reds fan and during the season I go to 50- 60 ballgames. I also love reading, travel, cooking, gardening and especially my family including two granddaughters.

Q: If you could have dinner with one person who would it be?

A: I would love to break bread with Michelle Obama. She is such a fabulous role model and is an inspiration to so many including myself.

Q: If you could have a super power what would it be?

I would love to be able to fly! No more traffic issues for me!

Q: What is your favorite quote, movie, television show, music or band?

A: My favorite quote is "Are you sure?" from my favorite movie My Cousin Vinny.

Q: What are your favorite local places?

A: Great American Ball Park, Krohn Conservatory, Smale Park, and my local three-bridge walk over the Roebling Bridge to the Purple Bridge and the Veteran's Bridge separating Newport from Covington.

2018 Outstanding Project in the Field of Aging

Sandra M. Jones Mitchell is a professional advocate for senior citizens. In 1975, Sandra’s first job was preparing hot meals for seniors citizens at Washington Park Elementary School. In 1976-1977, Sandra worked at Cincinnati Veteran’s Administration Hospital assisting the elderly escorting them to their doctors’ appointments within the hospital. In 1986, she worked in an Avondale nursing home as an Activity Coordinator. In 1988 Sandra began her career with Hamilton County Developmental Disabilities Services, where she continued assisting individuals with developmental disabilities, by helping them stay connected to the community.

In 1993, she co-founded Serving Older Adults through Changing Times (SO-ACT) along with the late Sandra L. Massey. SO-ACT is a 501C-3 non-profit organization created to serve and advocate for older adults for the right to aging in the communities they call home. When SO-ACT was started Avondale had the second largest senior population in Cincinnati. Sandra is a tireless advocate on behalf of our seniors and believes our elders are essential and vital members of our community. On August 26, 2018, SOACT celebrated 26 years of advocating for seniors throughout Hamilton and Butler Counties.

Sandra has also provided and continues to provide consulting services to families, helping them with their aging loved ones. She has helped arranged home care services, transportation and utilities assistance. For several years Sandra has been a part of the American Society on Aging- an organization well connected to aging issues nationally.

Sandra has addressed loneliness and isolation within our aging population and the effects it has on their health. She strongly believes by offering companionship, community activities, building relationships, and encouragement allows the seniors to stay engaged and just might prevent the ongoing spread of these documented major health issues.

The love and passion she has for older adults had a major impact on Sandra attending The College of Mount Saint Joseph to earn a Bachelor Degree in Gerontology in 2003. She will be continuing her education in 2019 towards her Master’s Degree in Gerontology from Miami University. “It is our duty to honor the wisdom of our elders, respect their life experiences and treat them as community gems”.

Sandra joined the Avondale Community Council at age 17, serving as a Trustee for 15 non-consecutive years and currently serves on the Board of Trustees. Sandra has also served on numerous other boards and community volunteer opportunities along with being an active member of the Corinthian Baptist Church since 2000. Sandra has been recognized for numerous awards for her advocacy services throughout the community.

The wife to Robert L. Mitchell, mother to Theodore and grandmother of Nyia and Angel, Sandra will be retiring from Hamilton County Developmental Disabilities Services in April 2019, after 30 years of services.

2018 Outstanding Service Provider in the Field of Aging

Deb Cyprych was the Executive Director for the Hyde Park Center for Older Adults from 1989 to 2018. She led a staff of ten in providing supportive services and engaging activities to enhance the independence and quality of life for older adults in eastern Cincinnati.

Under her leadership, the Center increased revenue; added staff; and expanded its service area from two to seven neighborhoods. While coping with the funding shortages that challenge many senior centers, Hyde Park Center has continued to achieve positive results for thousands of older adults through transportation, meals, case management, and wellness activities.

Deb was active in the APA from 1991 to 2004, when it was still called the Greater Cincinnati Joint Council on Geriatric Care, or GCJCGC. She served on board as Secretary, Co-Chair of Education Committee, and Co-Chair of Advocacy Committee; served on committee for two Tristate White House conferences on aging in 1995 and 2005

In 1993, Deb initiated a six-week genealogy series at the center, and got hooked. The genealogy group is still meeting once a month, and now Deb is starting a new chapter as a full-time professional genealogist.

She lives in an old house in Mount Auburn that needs a lot of work but has a great view. Her daughter and three grandchildren also live in Cincinnati, and she’s looking forward to spending more time with them.

2018 Outstanding Leader in the Field of Aging

Aimee Steel has worked at Blueridge Vista Health and Wellness since August of 2016, shortly after the hospital opened. She currently serve as the Director of Clinical Services, overseeing all of our social services and therapy staff, programming/therapy services, and discharge planning.

She received her Masters in Social Work with certification in Trauma Informed Care from Northern Kentucky University in May of 2015. She has worked in the field of mental health for over 10 years and have worked specifically in the Geriatric Psychiatry field for two and half years in the acute inpatient setting. She absolutely loves working with people every day in any capacity. She has a passion for mental health, and feels that the geriatric population is a largely underserved subset of the mental health community. Her most favorite part of her role aside from working alongside an amazing team, is being able to identify what drives geriatric patients to success, decreases behaviors and therefore improves their overall quality of life when they leave to go back home.

Blueridge Vista Health and Wellness CEO, Ben Teitelbaum, shared his thoughts on Aimee’s greatest challenge and accomplishment over the last 2 ½ years, “Although Aimee lacked any prior leadership experience, she took on a brand new leadership role 2 1/2 years ago at Blueridge Vista, a brand new freestanding inpatient psychiatric hospital. She has met that challenge head-on, building a reliable, trustworthy, and impactful team of social workers and recreational therapists. In her role as Director of Clinical Services, Aimee has built a top-notch department, become an incredible asset as part of the senior leadership team in the hospital, and been the mainstay for the organization during its formative years. She has significantly improved the lives of hundreds of patients, and blossomed into a true clinical leader along the way.“

Aimee lives in Milan, Indiana with her husband Jeremiah and three children, Brayden, age 9, Ava, age 7, and Madelynn, age 3. As a family they thoroughly enjoy the outdoors and can often be found on the Ohio River fishing.

Meet Bill DeHass

Born and raised in a small rural community, about 45 minutes east of Cincinnati, Bill DeHass grew up surrounded by corn fields and various livestock farms. His youth, for the most part, was spent exploring fields and wooded areas that went on for miles. His grandmother, who we affectionately called "Mo", lived with his family up until he was 18 years old. After she was diagnosed with Alzheimers Disease she passed rather quickly. Bill learned so much from her in my formative years, but he never forgot the feeling as the disease progressed and she didn't know who he was. She is the reason he took the path he is on now.

Immediately following his graduation from Northern Kentucky University in 2004, he began his social work career working at a small recovery center. At that time he worked with individuals from various age groups. In 2006, he began is career with Clermont Senior Services, Inc. working solely with older adults, and he has never looked back.

Clermont Senior Services is a private, 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to serving older adults. It is a source for information on services for seniors, age 60 and over, who live in Clermont County, Ohio.

For nearly 50 years, Clermont Senior Services has been providing and coordinating in-home and community based services, enabling older adults to live independently for as long as possible. We also serve as an information and referral source for seniors, as well as their families and caregivers.‘Service With Heart’ is the benchmark of our service and our staff exemplify this with their actions each and every day.

Bill says, "In my twelve years at Clermont Senior Services I have crossed paths with hundreds, probably thousands, of older adults and caregivers. Each of them shared their unique stories with me. I have always enjoyed the thought that I made it into their story.

Q: What do you enjoy most about being involved in the APA? A: APA is such a fascinating group of professionals, all coming from different organizations and backgrounds within the field of aging. Being involved with APA allows for the sharing of information in an attempt to better the services that are provided to the older adult population. I am also very fond of the Student Scholarship program. As many of us know, the cost of a college degree is on the rise. I love that APA can play a role, albeit small, in helping young professionals, especially those interested in the field of aging.

Q: If you could have dinner with one historical figure (living or not) who would it be and why? A: I don't know if he counts as historical, but I would love to have dinner with Bill Murray. How much fun would that be!?!

Q: If you could have one superpower, what would it be? A: Time travel...because, why wouldn't you want that.

Q: What is your favorite quote, movie, television show, music or band? A: I love all the films of Wes Anderson and I also have a very strong affection for 90s British rock band, Oasis.

Q: What is your favorite local place to go? This could be a restaurant, a park, a museum, any local place you enjoy. A: I would have to pick two favorites. The first is a little Thai restaurant on the East side called Ban Thai. My wife and I have been going there since we were teenagers. As a lover of music, my second favorite place is Everybody's Records in Pleasant Ridge. There is no better therapy than flipping through records.

Meet APA Member & Board Member, Jason Martin

Sometimes our paths take us in a direction we aren't anticipating. This is true for Jason Martin, Senior Account Executive at Home Helpers as well as an active APA member and board member.

As he was approaching his graduation from the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP), his father began living in a nursing home and his career interests took a turn.

His first position was an internship at Mercy West Park where he learned the overall operations of a senior living community, from patient-care to marketing. In this position, he was working toward his licensure as a Nursing Home Administrator, LHNA, offered by the Ohio Board of Executives of Long-Term Services and Supports, BELTSS.

While in this role he met his future wife, Kelly, who is also in healthcare. She works in communications and marketing for a local healthcare system. They have two children and live on the east side of Cincinnati. What Jason enjoys most about his work is seeing people overcome challenges related to aging and watching them heal and regain independence.

Meet APA Scholarship Winner Susan Mordigal

This September, Easterseals will begin it’s Opening Minds Through Art (OMA), an intergenerational art program for people with dementia, founded by Dr. Elizabeth Lokon of Miami University’s Scripps Gerontology Center.

Susan Mordigal, an APA Scholarship winner in 2014, spoke at our August 2018 event. She was a stay-at-home mom for 16 years. As her children became more independent she began pursuing some of her own interests. She has been building the OMA program for Easterseals since early 2017. Susan is very excited because she is able to intertwine many of her passions in this role. She is a Licensed Social Worker with a focus on Health in Aging. Susan also loves art. Her first degree is in Fine Arts from Moore College of Art and Design. She received training at the New York Botanical Garden through their Botanical Art and Illustration courses!

She was so honored to receive the APA Scholarship that she framed it and put it on her wall with her Master Degree from the University of Cincinnati. Susan has seen amazing results from OMA. Her first experience with the program was as a volunteer at Cedar Village Retirement Community in 2014; she then earned her OMA Lead Facilitator certificate through training with Dr. Lokon and her team at Miami University in 2017. The OMA program at Easterseals will officially launch on September 11.

The Benefits of participating in OMA are many; for the artists:

· self-expression (especially for non-verbal folks)

· relationship building through 1:1 regular contact

· community engagement,

· increased dignity and self-confidence through choice-making.

For the volunteers:

· increased knowledge of disability and dementia

· gaining self-confidence through new relationship building with a different population

· fulfilling service learning or volunteer requirements

Susan says, “Having a high quality, enjoyable, evidence-based program should help increase enrollment in our Adult Day Service (ADS) program, which will mean we can serve even more individuals to further empower them. We are also hoping to increase awareness in the community at large about disability, and that the disability does not define the person-they are a person with many capabilities first.”

Easterseals has already had a couple of new enrollments due to the offering of the OMA program and they are expecting that it will improve satisfaction with overall ADS services. To fund the program, Easterseals applied to several foundations and received a grant from ArtsWave as well as a couple other local sources who wish to remain anonymous. As with most non-profits, there are budget constraints on the program. The more volunteers they have, the more participants they can offer the OMA experience. Volunteers attend 6 hours of training, then 10 2-hour sessions of working with a local senior on an art project. Selected pieces will be on display at the end of session art show in November, open to the general public.

Meet APA Member and Board Member, Julia Hedges

Julia Hedges is a native of the tristate area and received her Bachelor’s degree from University of Kentucky. The most influential person in her life was her grandmother, who she watched struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease for 12 years.

At an early age, Julia knew she was meant for a career that made a difference in the lives of seniors. Passionate about advocating for the aging population and providing meaningful opportunities at end-of-life, Julia brings the advantage of having worked on both the independent/assisted living as well as the nursing/rehab sides of long term care. Currently, she serves as Account Executive for Hospice of Cincinnati, serving as an end-of-life resource to local physicians, hospitals, long term care staff, and the community at large.

Julia began her career in the aging field as Director of Resident Programs for Brookdale Senior Living. In this role, she served as a regional mentor and trainer specializing in classes on six dimensional whole person care for the aging adult: purpose, emotion, physical health, social activity, spirituality, and intellect.

In 2010, Brookdale Senior Living began its Wish of a Lifetime initiative to provide a helping hand in making some of the dreams of Brookdale’s residents come true. To request a Wish, residents fill out a Wish application explaining an experience they would like to have fulfilled and how that experience relates to one or more dimensions of Brookdale’s Optimum Life® platform. Optimum Life cultivates whole-person wellness through fulfillment in the six key dimensions. More than 600 Brookdale seniors have had their wish granted. In 2012, Julie was chosen to escort the winner of the Brookdale Wish of A Lifetime to New Orleans, Louisiana to fulfill her wish of visiting her hometown. You can see more of their trip on Flickr.

Julia received her Dementia Practitioner Certification in 2016.

In her spare time, Julia enjoys performing with local community theatre groups, practicing yoga and causing trouble with her 2 year-old daughter, Violet.
